    NASHVILLE (BP) -- The late U.S. Rep. John Lewis, an ordained preacher who studied theology at a college co-founded by the Southern Baptist Convention, is being remembered as a humble man whose faith-driven civil rights struggle endured until his death July 17 at age 80.

    During his studies at American Baptist Theological Seminary, now American Baptist College (ABC), he learned the principles of nonviolent protest that would move him to suffer more than 40 arrests and repeatedly risk his life in America’s civil rights struggles. Read More

    BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Thomas Edwin Blanton Jr., the last of three one-time Ku Klux Klansmen convicted in a 1963 Alabama church bombing that killed four Black girls and was the deadliest single attack of the civil rights movement, died Friday in prison, officials said. He was 82.

    Gov. Kay Ivey's office said Blanton died of natural causes. He was being held at Donaldson prison near Birmingham, prison officials said. Read More

    WASHINGTON (BP) -- Religious liberty advocates left the U.S. Supreme Court Tuesday (Dec. 5) with some hope that the justices would rule in favor of a Colorado cake artist who refused to design a wedding cake for a same-sex wedding celebration.

    The high court heard oral arguments in a major free-speech and free-exercise-of-religion case at the center of the contentious debate between religious liberty and sexual liberty. Multiple cases involving wedding vendors who oppose using their talents in support of gay marriage are being contested in the courts, but it was an appeal by Jack Phillips and his Masterpiece Cakeshop that gained the justices' consideration first.     MEMPHIS, Tenn. (BP) -- Four decades after Martin Luther King Jr. was killed in Memphis, a diverse group of pastors gathered at the historic Lorraine Hotel -- now the site of the National Civil Rights Museum -- to discuss the state of race relations in America.

    WAKE FOREST, N.C. (BP) -- Fifty years after the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary hosted a two-day event focused on America's struggle for social equality and the roles people of faith played during the civil rights movement.

    The events were held in partnership with the L. Russ Bush Center for Faith and Culture at SEBTS and consisted of a lecture and a panel discussion.
